Adams County
TransPort is located in Adams
County, which is projected to the be the fastest growing
county in Colorado for the next 20 years according to
forecasts by the Denver Regional Council of Governments.
Almost half the employment growth will be in Adams County
and the urban core.
Based on 2005 estimates,
1,449,502 people live within a 45 minute drive time from
TransPort and the civilian labor force is 746,585 people
with 22% being blue collar and 64% white collar. The
proportion or white collar workers increases as the 45
minute drive time expands to a 60 minute drive time and
education attainment levels also increase. Employment levels
across most major industry groups in the area show that the
labor shed is similar to that of the state and the rest of
the country.
Metro Denver has a mild
climate with 300 days of sunshine annually plus a business
environment positioned for growth. The
Denver-Boulder-Greeley MSA is the nation’s 19th largest with
2.6 million people. The Denver metro area is located just
east of the front range of the Rocky Mountains. This
provides Denver with a more amenable climate than found in
upper elevations. Temperatures are moderate with four
beautiful seasons. Denver offers world-class skiing and a
variety of other outdoor activities within a 90-minute
drive. Due to its highly desirable quality of life Denver
remains one of the fastest-growing areas in the nation.
Since 1990, the metro area’s population has expanded at an
average annual rate of nearly 2.6% - more than double the
national pace of expansion. Robust in-migration has
accounted for roughly 80% of metro Denver’s population
growth during the past decade.
The metro Denver area is
unique in that the area is considered a “consuming market,”
meaning there are more products shipped into the city than
out. This results in very competitive outbound freight
rates. This combined with the ability to bring products into
TransPort on rail, makes for economical freight costs. Also,
Colorado is the only Rocky Mountain state that receives
Overland Common Point (OCP) rates from the Pacific steamship
companies. OCP rates reduce cartage costs when an overseas
shipment is destined for the Pacific.

Favorable Labor Laws
The historic
and projected annual unemployment rate for the Denver region
mirrors the national unemployment rate. The Denver region’s
labor force demonstrates private sector unionization levels
below the national average. Colorado is not a Right-to-Work
state, meaning employees cannot be required to join a union
or pay it any monies as a condition of employment unless the
collective bargaining agreement between the employer and
union contains a provision requiring all employees to either
join the union or pay fees.
Metro Denver
is served by 18 Colorado Workforce Centers. These centers
help employers with recruitment assistance, including
applicant screening and skills testing. Also, the Colorado
FIRST and Existing Industry Customized Training Programs are
statewide job training programs that provide training
assistance as an incentive for companies that are relocating
or expanding in Colorado.
